Environmentally Sound Repairs

NEC Fielding promotes reuse of parts, giving them new life and contributing to environmental conservation.

Recovered Parts and Reused Parts

The number of parts that are recovered at 3R bases in NEC Group-wide 3R business, which commenced in 1999, has grown every year. However, in fiscal 2002, the number declined 23%, due to streamlining and reluctance on the part of consumers to purchase new equipment, which resulted in a decrease in the number of items collected.

Despite this, we maintained a parts reuse rate of 60%. The year-on-year decrease was also partly attributable to a shift in package production overseas, which reduced the number of recovered parts.

At present, one of our most pressing issues is increasing the number of 3R products by improving inspection and repair technology.

Recovered Parts by Product

In fiscal 2002, the number of pieces of hardware from which parts were recovered totaled approximately 7,000, as shown in the graph on the right.

In some cases, more than one part was recovered from a single piece of hardware.

More than half of the pieces of hardware from which parts were recovered were desktop computers.

Weight of Products from which Parts Were Recovered

In fiscal 2002, the combined weight of the hardware from which parts were recovered totaled approximately 54 tons, as shown in the graph on the right.

Large desktop computers result in a significant environmental impact when disposed of in their original form.
