introduction

Implementation of environmental management systems commenced with the issuance of ISO 14001 certification in September 1996. Over 10,000 companies are ISO14001 certified today, and Japan leads the world in number of certified companies by a significant margin.
As of April 15, there were 8,661 ISO 14001 auditors, indicating how deeply the standard has permeated the business world.
However, with the recent shift from environmental conservation activities aimed at conserving resources and energy to a focus on environmental management, we have entered an era in which companies will be required to demonstrate management capabilities that reflect a firm commitment to fulfilling social responsibilities.

We are on the threshold of a turning point in environmental management. We are departing an era in which the steady implementation of and continual improvements to environmental management systems based on international standards were judged on the basis of the details of activities and resulting performance. Today’s environmental reports are not simply communication tools that enable companies to report management performance and results with a degree of complacency, but a medium through which companies report how well they are fulfilling their corporate social responsibility, and we understand the necessity of using this report to invite feedback and improve communications with its readers.

In this report, NEC Fielding, Ltd. aims to attain a level of disclosure on a par with that of a sustainability report, using three factors—economic, environmental, and social—to measure its performance.

Environmental Report 2003 reports on the results of activities carried out in fiscal 2002.

Our second environmental report was created with the aim of presenting information in a simple and easy-to-read manner, and we hope that readers will find it useful and informative.

Finally, we would like to thank the NEC Environmental Management Division as well as NEC Environment and Material Research Laboratories for their guidance and support.
