Terms Definitions Mission Statement A mission statement is a clear statement of the company’s mission and a promise to stakeholders. Customer Engineer Customer engineer is an engineer that supports the customer’s use of their IT system. We have around 4,500 customer engineers throughout Japan, and they provide a range of support services, including recovery and repair of IT systems, periodic maintenance and parts replacement, management of IT assets, installation and construction of systems, upgrades (change to new systems and stronger functions), operation, optimization, monitoring, and security. Green Procurement Green procurement is the preferential selection of items with less environmental burden when procuring raw materials and parts for products or materials and services necessary to conduct business from suppliers, such as parts manufacturers, which also encourages suppliers to develop products with less of an environmental burden. Green procurement also may refer to the preferential procurement from companies that are ISO14001 (environmental management standard) certified. Fielding Activities Fielding activities refer to creating and providing various services within the field of information technology, by anticipating our customers' needs while ensuring the optimum performance and availability of our customers' IT assets at their places of work. Stakeholder A stakeholder is someone with an interest in the company. The term "stakeholder" has traditionally been used in reference to shareholders and customers, but has the concept of CSR has taken root in the business world, the term has expanded to include everyone with a "stake," or interest, in the company; or in other words, everyone who is affected by the company's activities. The term is now used to include suppliers and other business partners; local communities; non-profit organizations (NPOs); employees; and future generations, to name a few. At NEC Fielding, we are committed to being accountable to all our stakeholders, and growing synergistically with society from the perspective of CSR. Corporate Governance Corporate governance is a framework for monitoring corporate management. Specifically, it makes management responsible for managing the company with the goal of maximizing shareholder profits. Corporate governance sets targets for management and evaluates their performance (whether they are fulfilling this responsibility), and monitors whether management is creating profits for shareholders. Internal Controls The term "internal controls" generally refers to standardizing and documenting processes, and management, monitoring, and guarantees with the goals of healthy operation of the organization and monitoring for illegal behavior within the company. Risk Management Risk management is a process whose purpose is to manage organizational risk, and avoid or reduce losses and damages from risks. It is an operations-management methodology for effectively minimizing unforeseen damages from all types of threats, at the minimum cost. P2P File Sharing Software This is a kind of software which shares files over the Internet between larger numbers of users. If a computer on which this type of software is installed becomes infected by a computer virus, there is a risk that any data stored on that computer could be leaked to an indeterminate large number of people via the network. Business Continuity Plan (BCP) A business continuity plan is a document indicating policies and procedures for ensuring the continuity of the companies business in the event of natural disasters, terrorism, or other unforeseen events. CSR Supplies These refer to products carried by NEC Fielding that assist our customers in environmental conservation or help reduce their risk. We support our customers' CSR activities by promoting the sale of these supplies. (Some examples of CSR supplies are recycled EP cartridges, backup power supplies, and earthquake-proofing goods.) Information Rights Management (IRM) IRM is a tool provided by Microsoft Office 2003 for preventing information leaks. CS (Customer Satisfaction) At NEC Fielding, the foundation of our business operations is customer satisfaction: offering services that satisfy our customers, working and growing together with our customers. E-CSP (Empowered & Excellent Customer Satisfaction Program) We began this program in fiscal 2003 with the aim of further improving customer satisfaction. The Japanese SOX Law Part of the Financial Instruments and Exchange Law, also known as the Japanese SOX Law, is a statutory system modeled on the US Sarbanes-Oxley Act that requires enhanced systems for auditing corporate accounts and stronger internal controls. This law was enacted amidst a string of corporate scandals, such as falsified entries in financial statements. The law will apply to all listed companies and their consolidated subsidiaries starting with the March 2009 settlement of accounts. The Financial Instruments and Exchange Law is an amended version of its predecessor, the Securities and Exchange Law. It strengthens penalties for unfair trading and falsifying entries in disclosure documents, and adds requirements for internal controls. The Japanese SOX Law places a greater emphasis on IT than its US counterpart, stipulating the use of IT as a fundamental element of internal controls. Normalization Normalization is the idea that persons with and without disabilities should live together in society without any special distinctions between them, and that this is the best outcome. Normalization also includes programs, policies, and the like aimed at achieving this. OJT (On the Job Training) The goal of OJT is to train employees at the worksite in the skills and capabilities needed to do their jobs. Self-directed Study We call individualized instruction self-directed study. Our goal is for our employees to improve their skills through instruction that is self directed. NetEMS NetEMS was jointly developed by NEC and the Tohmatsu Environmental Research Institute Ltd. NetEMS is an environmental management system shared between organizations using the Internet. Computer Assisted Auditing Techniques (CAAT) This is a screening system using an IT network that was developed jointly by the Japan Quality Assurance Organization (JQA) and NEC. S21K Contract Management System This is a system for managing agreements from the receipt of hardware-maintenance contract information to registration and signing. Global Warming Potential (GWP) Global warming potential (GWP) is a figure representing the "potential" for causing global warming. It is based on carbon dioxide (which has a potential of 1), and represents the relative strength of a substance's global-warming action over a 100-year period. When comparing GWP over a 100-year period, methane has about 21 times the potential of the same mass of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide has about 310 times the potential, and fluorocarbons have from several hundred to several thousand times the potential.
